REDCON:
Introduction:
"REDCON," officially styled as "Redcon - Strike Commander," is a real-time strategy video game developed by Hexage, released in 2016. This game draws inspiration from the Japanese anime film "Memories - Episode 3: CANNON FODDER."
In "REDCON," players assume control of a fort, which later evolves into more formidable "Fortress"-type fortifications, equipped with cannons. The primary objective is to obliterate the enemy's fort or fortress while safeguarding one's own. Players have the opportunity to upgrade and customize weapons and facilities between battles.
Gameplay:
The game offers a diverse array of weapons and facilities. The weaponry consists mainly of artillery cannons firing shells of varying sizes and densities, their accuracy contingent on the target's accessibility. Some weapons serve as launch pads, propelling different missile types, including explosive, toxic, and incendiary variants, or operate as silos for launching ICBMs. A select few deploy energy-based weapons relying on power rather than ammunition, characterized by enhanced accuracy. Facilities, on the other hand, perform utility functions, such as fort/fortress defense enhancement and increased weapon accuracy. A handful of facilities engage in active roles, like upgrading soldier weaponry and armor or activating sleeper cells within enemy fortifications.
Players also manage soldiers who serve as the fort/fortress crew, assuming various roles, from intelligence officers to pilots and engineers. Soldiers repair damaged friendly structures, dismantle enemy structures, and engage in combat with enemy soldiers (with red soldiers targeting yellow ones, and vice versa) within the same structure. Soldiers are capable of operating machinery to expedite or improve tasks, although not always essential (though some facilities necessitate soldier operation, such as the Intelligence Officer for Clandestine Operations or the need for pilots to launch the Charon Impact-Landing ICBM). Soldiers utilize six primary tools during gameplay, with two upgraded variations. The most commonly used tools include the hammer for repairs, the jackhammer for structure demolition, the telescope for enhanced accuracy, and the rifle for infiltration combat (later upgraded to a machine gun variant). Less frequently employed tools include the phone (for Intelligence Officers during Clandestine Operations) and the Control Room (for Engineers operating the OMEGA Capital Destroyer). There is also a rare yellow variant of the Control Room for Engineers operating the Kranz Cannon. A seventh tool, the "Facility Controls," is concealed behind the soldier's back during use.
"REDCON" unfolds in a world where World War I, referred to as the "Great Unification War" within the game, persists for millennia. The Empire State, an authoritarian regime led by Fuhrer Adler Grimm, wages an ongoing war against the rebellious Krux nation, led by the treacherous Master General Franz Erhard Kranz, who previously mentored the player. Throughout the game, it becomes clear that Kranz and Grimm were once allies, if not close friends. The protagonist, Strike Commander (full name "Strike Commander Triumphant"), is tasked with leading the offensive against Krux.
Reception:
Initially, Strike Commander oversees a small fort in the battle against Krux, demonstrating tactical prowess by defeating Krux forces in multiple engagements. Eventually, he foils Krux units attempting to destroy a dam that would flood the gambling town of Pompeii, decimating the Empire State's General Staff, including Fuhrer Adler Grimm, which would effectively conclude the war. Despite General Kranz's warning that they are not enemies and mocking Strike Commander for trusting the Empire State, Strike Commander embarks on an offensive against Krux. Following an extensive campaign, Strike Commander Triumphant prevails over the Krux army and eliminates Kranz. Surprisingly, Fuhrer Grimm congratulates him but asserts that the Empire State requires a perpetual enemy for profit and unity, branding Strike Commander a traitor. Lieutenant Bella Warren, Strike Commander's executive officer, aligns with Grimm, while Strike Commander's Field Sergeant attempts to defect to his side. Strike Commander assumes leadership of Krux, adopting Kranz's flag (a black "X" on a blue background) and initiating a counteroffensive against the Empire State. He vanquishes all Imperial generals in the General Staff. Adler Grimm celebrates the demise of his "idiotic generals" and departs with Bella to Pompeii. Bella hints at her abandonment of Strike Commander to spy on the Fuhrer. Subsequently, Strike Commander prepares to destroy the dam, mirroring Kranz's earlier attempt, with the game's conclusion suggesting that Strike Commander Triumphant will meet the same fate as Kranz, perpetuating the cycle of perpetual warfare.
"REDCON" has garnered generally positive reviews from players. Rob Rich from Gamezebo awarded the game a 4 out of 5 rating, commending its visual style and engaging gameplay, likening it to "FTL: Faster Than Light." He did, however, criticize the lack of tutorials for certain features and the somewhat lackluster default base layout. Thomas Olson praised the game for providing a higher level of challenge than typical mobile games and appreciated the substantial content, which includes over 100 missions.
Steve Lichtfield reviewed the Windows Phone version of the game, lauding its exceptional animation and atmosphere in a mobile game. He also commended the gameplay but found fault with the somewhat confusing backstory.
